Literacy
The Literacy Program began in 2005 to address the pressing need for children’s books for community and school libraries.
By the end of 2021 over 20,000 books had been distributed for children across the province. Our Branches have made this program a success by helping to meet the specific needs and opportunities in their areas. The Literacy Chairs in the branches determine where books are to be gifted. Examples include:
- Schools
- Children’s wards in hospitals
- Homes for single mothers with children
- Interior Health – Speech Pathology and Public Nursing Programs
- Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy Program
- Delta Assist
- Family Plan and Learn Program, Coquitlam
- Jeneece Place, Victoria
- Salvation Army Christmas Hampers
- Libraries
Your support for this program is appreciated. Our province has many children who benefit, ranging from children new to English as well as to other others who may not have the opportunity to have books to enjoy, and to enhance their literacy skills. By being community centred the program is flexible and well suited to meet the needs of our communities.
