The recipients of the BC Hydro Power Pioneer Award at the 2026 Greater Vancouver Regional Fair held on April 9 and 11 2026 are students Kylo Chen and Jim Chan.

Their project was:
How does the frequency of vibration affect the electricity generated by a piezoelectric transducer?

If it is exposed to different vibration frequencies from a speaker (0-500 Hz), the output will initially
increase with frequency, peak near 300Hz, and decrease at higher frequencies.

We first tested the disc by taping it against a speaker cone, then playing different frequencies, and
measured AC voltage with a multimeter.

Our results show that the voltage output increased from 0Hz to 300Hz, where it reached a peak, and
decreased at higher frequencies.

We can conclude that our hypothesis is supported, since our results produced a curve that peaked at
300Hz, and matching the disc’s resonant frequency is more relevant than increasing the frequency.
