Sun Life Update – Virtual Services

SUN LIFE UPDATE

TEMPORARY VIRTUAL SERVICES COVERAGE FOR PARAMEDICAL PRACTITIONERS

As a result of COVID-19, in-person visits to many health care providers may not be available for patients. Therefore, on a temporary basis, for the providers listed below, you’ll have the same coverage for virtual services as for non-virtual services.

Sun Life will cover virtual services for appointments where you don’t need in-person treatment. This means if you’re covered under the BC Hydro retiree extended health care plan, your coverage for the following practitioners will also cover eligible virtual services performed in Canada, up to the coverage limits under the professional practitioner benefit:

Naturopath
$10 per visit for the first 12 visits per benefit year, up to a maximum of $200 per person per benefit year and $500 per family per benefit year. There is no per visit maximum for additional visits during the same benefit year

Physiotherapist
$10 per visit for the first 12 visits. There is no per visit maximum for additional visits during the same benefit year

Chiropractor
10 per visit for the first 12 visits per benefit year, up to a maximum of $200 per person per benefit year and $500 per family per benefit year. There is no per visit maximum for additional visits during the same benefit year

Speech Therapist
up to a maximum of $100 per dependent child under age 17 in a benefit year

Please note that it is up to the service provider to offer virtual services.

Claims for Virtual Services as described above may be submitted via the my Sun Life mobile app.
To make a virtual service claim:

1. Use “in patient’s home” as the location of service for virtual claims
2. Upload a photo or screenshot of the receipt via the my Sun Life mobile app

Contact Sun Life at 1-800-361-6212 if you have questions about virtual services for paramedical practitioners
or how to submit a claim using the Sun life mobile app.

Prescription Drug Coverage – Home Delivery

If you are covered under the BC Hydro retiree extended health care plan through Sun Life, coverage for prescription drugs includes reasonable and customary charges incurred for medically necessary drugs and medicines, which are prescribed by a physician for the treatment of an illness or injury and dispensed by a licensed pharmacist or physician legally authorized to dispense such drugs.

Many pharmacies offer delivery services for prescription drugs. Some pharmacies don’t have a fee for home delivery of your prescription drug, while others charge a delivery fee. The retiree extended health care plan does not cover delivery fees charged by a pharmacy.

If you’re unable to pick up your prescription at the pharmacy, your pharmacy doesn’t offer delivery services, or they charge a fee for these services, Sun Life has made an arrangement with McKesson Canada and Rexall Direct™ to offer free home delivery.

McKesson’s Specialty Prescription Pharmacy Services offers home delivery for specialty medications, which may need special handling. Rexall Direct™ offers home delivery for all other medications – maintenance drugs and drugs required for acute conditions.

If you would like to sign up for this service, call 1-833-554-0731 and speak to a McKesson Canada representative to start the process. You will need to provide your:
Contract number (150533)

Member ID (refer to your Sun Life card)

List of medications that you need delivered

Name of your pharmacy

The representative from McKesson Canada will let you know if you need to use the McKesson Specialty Prescription Pharmacy Services or Rexall Direct™. A courier will deliver your medication and will endeavour to complete the delivery within 5 business days. Delivery may take longer due to current circumstances. Note that there is no charge for the delivery.

McKesson Canada’s hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

All medications are eligible for home delivery except narcotics and controlled substance medications. Provincial laws don’t allow pharmacists to mail these types of medications. These prescriptions must be picked up at the pharmacy.

COVID-19 AND OUT OF COUNTRY COVERAGE (OOC)

Sun Life is treating illness due to COVID-19 like any other medical emergency when it comes to extended health care and out-of-country coverage. Therefore, emergency travel assistance coverage under the Extended Health Care plan doesn’t change while travelling out-of-country.

However, if you travelled outside of Canada on or after March 19, 2020, the emergency travel assistance program will not cover any expenses during and after a period of quarantine (directed by a doctor or public health official), unless you showed symptoms of or have tested positive for COVID-19, in which case you will be covered. You will continue to be covered for all other medical emergencies.

This supports the Government of Canada’s efforts to prevent non-essential travel and repatriate Canadians travelling abroad. We urge plan members to follow the recommendations of the Government of Canada Travel Advisory. By staying in Canada, we can all help to curb the further spread of COVID-19.

Sun Life has also launched a dedicated page titled: Latest on COVID-19 that will be continually updated with the latest news, including information about the virus, about market volatility and a FAQ section.

DENTAL HEALTH SPENDING ACCOUNT (HSA) CLAIMS

Reminder:
submit your dental health spending account (HSA) claims to Sun Life.

You must submit your claim within 90 days of the end of the year during which the expense is incurred. This means a dental expense incurred in 2019 must be received by Sun Life by March 30, 2020 to be eligible for payment from the 2019 dental HSA allowance.

There are two ways to make a claim:

ONLINE:
Sign in to mysunlife.ca or use the my Sun Life Mobile app and select “Submit a claim”. Easy-to-use screens guide you through a series of steps. If you submit your claim online, you must keep your original receipts for 12 months as you may be asked to mail your original receipts for audit purposes. You can also set up your direct deposit information with Sun Life to have your claim reimbursements deposited directly to your bank account.

BY MAIL:
Complete the Retiree Dental Health Spending Account Claim Form and mail it along with your original dental receipt(s). You can find the claim form online at mysunlife.ca or request one by calling Sun Life. Power Pioneer members can also find the claim form at powerpioneers.com/member-resources in the Pensions and Benefits section.
