SITE C DAM TOUR
On June 25th, 16 members of the Northern Power Pioneers took part in a tour of the Site C Dam project. BC Hydro Site C Community Relations Manager, Bob Gammer, coordinated this tour for our members. He was assisted by Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Kate O’Neil, in conducting the tour around the 980 hectare site.
As the site is still an active construction site, we were all outfitted for the morning with full personal protective equipment (PPE) and fire retardant (FR) coveralls.
The tour was approximately four hours in length, featuring a stop on the dam crest/intake deck to see the dam, reservoir, approach channel, tailrace and intakes/spillway. We drove by the substation (the largest in the BC Hydro system). We were also able to go inside the powerhouse and exit out the back to view the penstocks and unit transformers.
Of the 16 members that took part, 3 were members from our Peace area and joined the others from Prince George. After the tour, a few of us drove the new realigned Highway #29, towards Hudson’s Hope, for views of WAC Bennett and Peace Canyon dams.
It was a busy two days, but well worth the once in a lifetime experience.
Many thanks to Bob and Kate for this great tour.
