Central Interior Science Exhibition
On March 8 Power Pioneer Branch President Al Beeson and Science Fair chair Tim Thompson attended the Central Interior Regional Science Exhibition at the University of Northern BC to assist in the medal round judging. Between Al and Tim they judged nine exhibits from the schools within the regional area. Students brought their exhibits to be judged to receive either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal.
Later that evening Al and Tim attended the awards ceremony to present the Power Pioneers award to a winning student whose exhibit depicted an electrical theme. This year the award was presented to Cameron Burg and his partner Randall Lackey-Dykstra on their exhibit entitled “Faster or Slower”. Using Randall’s race car, they removed the 8.5 volt battery out of the race car and replaced it with two 20 volt dc batteries. They did several tests using one 20 volt battery, then wired two 20 volt batteries in parallel, then wired them in series to give it 40 volts. Everything went well until they wired it in series, which burnt up the motor, originally rated for 8.5 volts. These two students were awarded a gold medal at the awards ceremony.
Pictured below is the young lads’ science exhibit, as well as Al presenting a certificate, $100 cheque and trophy to Cameron at the award ceremony. Unfortunately Cameron’s partner Randall was unable to attend the Science Exhibition due to illness.
