FV Power Pioneers UFV 2025 Science Fair report
This year’s science fair was hosted once again by the Faculty of Science at the University of the Fraser Valley. The UFV staff did an outstanding job of organizing and administering both the judging event on April 10th and the awards ceremony on April 16th. This year’s fair saw a record 180 entries representing 241 students from a wide variety of public and private schools. The BC/Yukon Science Fair Foundation provides a wide variety of awards to each of 12 regions including a Four Thousand dollar university scholarship, an all expense paid trip to the National Science Fair, a trip to Science World in Vancouver for a whole class and numerous cash prizes.
The BC Hydro Power Pioneers Special Award criteria is ”To be awarded to a student(s) in Grades 4-12 who creates a project which creatively demonstrates electrical conservation and it’s environmental, social, and economic impacts.”
The Fraser Valley Branch of BC Hydro Power Pioneers was represented by Anita Jarrett, Cathy Spence, Bob Mugford, and Rick Unger who had a total of 14 projects to judge.
This year’s winner of our award was a student from the Khalsa School of the Fraser Valley, Harvinder Singh Gill for his project ”Powering Our Future – Nuclear Fusion”. His project explained in detail the technical aspects and benefits of including ”micro-nuclear” technology in future electrical generation. Harvinder received the Power Pioneers perpetual plaque for his school, a $100 cash prize and a copy of the Power Pioneers history book ”Voices From Bridge River”.
