The BCE Victoria office picnic, 1938
The labour climate was relatively good until about 1929 and the Depression. After that it got very, very difficult. In the mid-'30s there were protest marches on Hastings Street. What could people do? They had no money. People were relying on handouts or help from relatives. A lot of people - married people included - were living on $65 a month.
